Εχει δώσει το όνομά του σε μια ολόκληρη κατηγορία υλικών. Είναι αυτοφυές στην περιοχή της Κεντρικής Αμερικής. Συνδυάζει τόνους από πιπέρι, κανέλα, γαρίφαλο και μοσχοκάρυδο, γι’ αυτό και οι Αγγλοι το ονομάζουν «allspice», δηλαδή «όλα τα μπαχαρικά μαζί».
